Your Dubai Business Setup Questions Answered

The 20 most common questions about UAE business setup — from costs and timelines to visas, banking, and tax compliance. Answered by Arab First specialists.

Costs & Timelines

How much does it cost to set up a company in Dubai?

Total setup costs depend on license type, freezone, and office package. Budget AED 15,000–35,000 for a basic freezone setup (license + flexi desk + 1 visa). Mainland setups with an office lease typically cost AED 30,000–80,000+ in the first year. Arab First packages include all government fees and our service charge.

How long does the entire setup process take?

Freezone setups: 3–7 business days for the license. Bank account opening adds 2–6 weeks. Mainland setups: 7–14 business days. Offshore: 5–10 business days. Complete setup (license + visa + bank account): 4–8 weeks from start to fully operational.

Are there annual costs after the initial setup?

Yes. Annual renewal fees apply to the trade license (AED 5,000–20,000+), office lease, and employee visa renewals. Some freezones also require an annual audit report. Arab First offers annual renewal packages so you never miss a deadline.

Visa Questions

Can I get a UAE residence visa through my company?

Yes. Once your company is formed, you can apply for an investor/partner residence visa. The visa is valid for 2–3 years and is renewable. You and your dependants (spouse, children under 18, and in some cases parents) can all obtain UAE residency through the company.

How many visas can I issue on my company license?

Mainland companies can issue visas scaled to office size (typically 1 visa per 80 sq ft of office space). Freezone companies get a fixed allocation based on their office package: 1–2 (flexi), 3–5 (shared office), 6+ (private office). Offshore companies cannot issue UAE residence visas.

What is a Golden Visa and how do I qualify?

The UAE Golden Visa is a 10-year renewable residence visa for investors, entrepreneurs, skilled professionals, and real estate investors. Business owners who invest AED 2 million or more in a UAE company, or who have a startup valued above AED 500,000, may be eligible. Arab First handles Golden Visa applications.

Banking

How long does it take to open a UAE corporate bank account?

Bank account opening in the UAE typically takes 2–6 weeks after submitting the application. Processing times vary significantly by bank — some digital banks can open accounts faster. Arab First has relationships with multiple UAE banks and guides you through the entire KYC process.

Which UAE bank is best for a new company?

For SMEs and startups, Emirates NBD, Mashreq, and RAK Bank are popular choices. ADCB and FAB are strong for larger companies. For fintech and international businesses, Wio Bank (digital) offers fast onboarding. The right bank depends on your transaction volumes, international transfers, and sector. Our advisors match you to the best fit.

Can I open a UAE bank account as a non-resident?

Most UAE banks require a UAE residence visa to open a personal or business bank account. You would typically need to form your company first, obtain your investor visa, then apply for the corporate account. Some banks with international offices allow account opening before relocation in limited circumstances.

Tax & Compliance

Does the UAE have corporate tax?

Yes. A 9% corporate tax was introduced in June 2023, applying to taxable income above AED 375,000. Income below AED 375,000 is taxed at 0%. Most small businesses and startups will be below the threshold in their early years. Qualifying freezone businesses may be eligible for 0% on qualifying income.

Do I need to register for UAE VAT?

VAT registration is mandatory if your annual taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500. The standard UAE VAT rate is 5% — one of the world's lowest. Arab First handles VAT registration, return filing, and ongoing compliance.

What records must I keep as a UAE business owner?

UAE companies must maintain accounting records for at least 5 years. VAT-registered businesses must keep tax invoices, customs documentation, and financial records. Some freezones require an annual audited financial statement. Arab First's accounting team handles bookkeeping, VAT filing, and audit preparation.

After Setup

Can I change my business activity after setup?

Yes. You can add or change business activities on your license, subject to authority approval and an amendment fee. Major activity changes (e.g. switching from commercial to professional) may require additional approvals. Contact us before making any changes to ensure compliance.

Can I hire employees from any country?

Yes. UAE companies can hire employees from any country. Each employee requires a UAE employment visa and work permit. The process involves uploading the offer letter, labour contract, and medical fitness test results through the MOHRE or freezone authority portal. Arab First handles all employment visa applications.
